Here are some tips to use research for marketing yourself.

Know Your Audience:

If you understand who your audience is & what they like, you can create better marketing strategies.

You can do this by:

  1. Talking to people who might be interested in your work. You can ask what they want and what they like.

  2. Looking at the numbers & likes on your social media posts. You’ll see what people are interested in and what they're not.

  3. Joining online communities where your audience hangs out. See what they're talking about and what they care about.

Competitive Analysis:

Check out what other people in your field are doing. This should give you good ideas for your own marketing.

You can do this by:

  1. Visiting websites of people who do what you do. See what they're saying and how they're saying it. Look for the best copy!

  2. Following your competition on social media and see what kinds of posts they make. You can learn a lot from what gets a lot of likes and comments. (Note, their personality might play a big part in their fame)

  3. Checking out what customers are saying about your competition. This can give you an idea of what they're doing well and what they're not.

Best Practices:

Learning about what works well in your field can help you do better marketing.

You can do this by:

  1. Reading blogs and emails from people who know a lot about your field. They can tell you about new things and give you tips. (Google Alerts is a good start)

  2. Watching online talks about marketing and freelancing. You can learn a lot from people who have been doing it for a while. This is what I do :)

  3. Talking to people who do what you do. They can share what they know and help you learn too. That’s why having your tribe is important!
